New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) officer, posted in the sanitation department has committed suicide after consuming poison on Saturday evening. A suicide note was recovered from the deceased, which allegedly states that harassment from the senior officers of the department was the reason for taking this extreme step.
Harpal Singh was working as an Assistant sanitation officer in the department. His family alleged that Harpal was under extreme pressure as his senior officers were pressuring him to shell out extra time to look after the sanitatio area, which didn’t come under his territory. ” Harpal was forced to take up the responsibility of cleaning open defecation laid near railway-track In Sarojni Nagar area. Officers started harassing him on the various pretext when he declined to take up the responsibility,” his brother said. Citing justice for Harpal, his brother said NDMC officers should be arrested for forcing him to commit suicide.
“Body of the deceased is handed over to the family after the postmortem. His suicide note is being examined. FIR will be registered when prima face evidence leads foul in the case,” a police officer said adding that Harpal had gone to the office on Saturday morning where he allegedly consumed poison in the afternoon. He then himself rushed to the hospital in his car. Seeing his deteriorating condition hospital administration informed police and his family members about the incident. Harpal later succumbed during the treatment.
Harassment in the department is not new in the officer. This kind of incident often come in light. Laws are laid to sought out harassment issue within the organisation.
